The International Judo Federation reaffirms its support for Léa Fontaine following comments directed at her after her victory at the Ecole Mont-Olivet Lausanne Grand Slam. Sporting performances can be analysed, debated and discussed. Personal attacks, discriminatory remarks and comments targeting an athlete’s physical appearance, however, have no place in judo.

Judo is founded on respect. The IJF will always support its athletes in accordance with judo values and the Olympic Charter.

This situation is a reminder of the shared responsibility of the entire judo community. Athletes must be recognised for their commitment, work, courage and performance on the tatami, and treated with dignity in every circumstance.

Judo is a sport for all. Every person, without discrimination of any kind, has a place on the tatami and, through judo, can find an opportunity to learn, grow and fulfil their potential. The IJF will continue to promote an inclusive environment in which every athlete can compete, progress and inspire others with confidence and pride.
